Muslims never identified with OBL or condoned his appalling crimes. They, however, understood what forced a quiet young man to kick his billion-dollar fortune and take up arms. He struck a chord in not just Arabs and Muslims but in the dispossessed everywhere by taking on the big bullies who have killed more innocents and wreaked more destruction on our world than a million Bin Ladens could have managed in their life time.

I have been looking for some well written opinion from the region and their take. It is close to what I thought... very torn in some regards and in others very anti-US, can't blame em in some respects.... but all in all a good read. Thanks!

I didn't agree with the conclusion...while the author admits its an ideology that doesn't die, he links it only to the 'Holy Land', as in Palestine/Israel and no need to be in Af-Pak. It's contradictory stuff.
In the history of simplistic religious attitudes, there have always been 'Kharjites' and the point has to be driven that Kharjites can themselves not be tolerated.
In the more contemporary sense, Pakistan's establishment weren't simply 'left holding the baby' by their US partners...they tried cultivating the most anti-Indian groups they could find, by adopting the worst possible policies, that included flooding the country with narcotics and guns as well as adopting the Wahhabi influence...this has all come back to haunt them, yet incredibly many there still don't see it.
While US Imperialism was a crime, such as one example out of many, Iraq, and the US hypocrisies continue, such as not censuring Yemen and Bahrain, and understandable how some would like to fight back oppression....this was only possible when you have so many willing local participants...and that included the vile leaderships in the ME and elsewhere (Uzbekistan and Chechnya), which is finally understood that people were being put down by their own fellow countrymen more than by foreign influence, and driven to extreme ideological desperation by such tyrants - and while it may have been 'fun' (if you allow to delude yourself that civilian casualties are acceptable) to attack the superpower source that supported such governments and make them squirm, in the long-term, it did nothing to improve the local people's lot.
Thankfully, on the whole, things maybe looking up...
